In a colourful function held at Panguru Village in Yerpedu Mandal, near Tirupati in Chittoor District, the Union Human Resources Development Minister Mrs. Smriti Irani laid foundation stone and unveiled the plaques for three institutes of national importance, such as Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT),-Chittoor, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Tirupati, and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER)-Tirupati on Saturday.
About twenty thousand students from various Universities, Engineering Colleges and other colleges of Chittoor district were attended for this historical event.
The Chief Minister of AP Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, Union Minister Mr. M. Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister of State, Mr.Y.S. Chowdary, AP Ministers Mr. Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Mr. B. Gopalakrishna Reddy, Dr. P. Narayana, Dr. K. Srinivas, and Tirupati, MP, Mr. V. Varaprasada Rao, Mr. Srini Raju, Chairman Sri City and Mr. Ravindra Sannareddy, MD, Sri City,Prof.U.B.Desai, Mentor Director of IIIT Chittoor and Director of IIT Hyderabad Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthy, Director of IIT Chennai and Prof. K.N. Ganesh, Director, IISER,Pune graced the occasion. Mrs. Sumita, Secretary of Higher Education, Govt.of AP and Mrs. Udhayalakshmi, Commissioner of Technical Education, Govt.of AP,Mr. Siddarth Jain, Collector, Chittoor District, Mr. Gopinath Jetti, Urban SP, Tirupati and a host of other senior officials were present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion Mrs. Smriti Irani said, "I am happy to dedicate these institutions to the people of Andhra Pradesh, particularly, Royalaseema. I am sure they will develop as speciality centres in their respective fields".
Stating that she would visit the state in next month, she said,"I am glad to inform that in April I will visit AP for laying foundation stone for Central University in Ananthapoor."
Addressing the gathering Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said," Chittoor district has emerged as a major industrial hub, with the presence of Sri City. Now, with the these institutions the region will become an educational hub. As the IIIT-Chittoor is situated in Sri City amidst the industries it will have strong linkages with the industry."
Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said, "I consider it a historic day, as we witnessed foundation stone was laid for three national instate in the same region on the same day. I am sure soon Tirupati will emerge as a knowledge hub"
Mr. C. Srinivasa Raju Member Secretary of IIIT Chittoor and Chairman of Sricity (Pvt) Ltd in his speech briefly explained the efforts of Sri City in getting the IIIT-Chittoor sanctioned to Satyavedu Mandal. He said that the Institute is committed to provide world-class education with curriculum comparable with the leading Universities in the US. He said that the Institute would establish partnerships with leading universities in the US, Japan and other developed nations for academic and research programs. He said with the blessings of both Central and State Governments, IIIT at Sri City would emerge as one one top ten technology institutes of India in next ten years and will be recognised at international level for its research in chosen fields.
Prof.U.B. Desai, Mentor Director of IIIT Chittoor and Director of IIT Hyderabad in his brief speech said that this model was an improved version of IIIT Hyderabad model, which is India"s first truely not-for-profit public institution supported by industry similar to the leading institutions in the US.
Commenting on the occasion Mr. Ravindra Sannareddy, Managing Director, Sri City said,"These institutions will become epicentre of Knowledge and education in the country." Stressing the need for having relevant and strong linkages between educational institutes and industry, he said," As the state government is developing the Chittoor district as a mega industrial hub, strong linkages with the industry will give the avenue for relevant application of knowledge that has been acquired by the students of these institutions."
At present, the IIIT-Chittoor is functioning in a temporary campus in Sri City. A plot of 77 acres area has been allotted for the dedicated campus, which is expected to be ready within two years.
